A pair of cutters is an essential tool in any person’s toolbox! Whether you’re a regular user of cutters, or simply use them for the occasional snip, their presence in your toolbox will make your life immeasurably easier.

If you don’t have a good pair of cutters, and have instead been using an Exacto knife or other blade to do your wire cutting, then you don’t know what you’re missing out on. These blades don’t have the precision necessary to make successful cuts and depending on the thickness of the wire you’re snipping, you could slip and hurt yourself.

There are a few different types of pliers that you should familiarise yourself with, to decide which one is right for you and your next project. Cutters are mostly made for gripping something round, like a pipe or a rod, or for gripping something smaller, like wires.

Side Cutters

These cutters are also known as “lineman’s cutters”, these are mostly used for cutting wires and are among the most common types of pliers found in any hardware store. These cutters come with two blades, one on either side and are often found with longer handles. These handles are often made of metal, which sometimes is wrapped in thick rubber to increase comfort and grip. These are particularly useful to electricians, IT professionals. The sharp blades and longer handles make them easy to use in places where manoeuvrability is tight.

Diagonal Cutters

A good pair of diagonal cutters tend to smaller than your standard wire cutters and have a wide range of applications, from electrical work, to snipping chicken wire! Because they are smaller than your average pair of side cutters, you can use them in even tighter spaces. Diagonal wire cutters can also be used for skinning wires down – that is, stripping them of their coating. Electricians also use diagonal wire cutters, but for different purposes.

Crimpers

Another useful addition in your wire cutting arsenal is a pair of crimpers. These are typically long-handled wire cutters that have different thickness settings, with circular blades. Crimpers are used to trim everything from wires to tree branches – Bonsai trees, in particular, require exquisite care; the trimming of these trees is often done with a pair of Bonsai cutters.

Why Should I Buy a Pair of Cutters?

Now that you have a rough idea of what kind of cutters are available to you, you want to know why you need to buy a pair! Buying a pair of cutters doesn’t have to be a complicated process – the type of cutters that you’ll need depends on what you’re using them for.
